Description

Mesa Boogie Mark II A Head (1979, USA) — Koa Cabinet, Graphic EQ and Transformer

A vintage gem from the golden age of boutique amp design, this 1979 Mesa/Boogie Mark II A is the real deal—handbuilt in California, fully loaded with features, and housed in a rare koa wood cabinet with wicker grille. It’s one of the earliest examples of the high-gain revolution, offering unmatched harmonic saturation, responsive EQ shaping, and the unmistakable Mesa voice that defined a generation of guitar tones.

Key Features:

  • Original Mark II A (1979) – First-generation circuit, handwired in Petaluma.

  • Koa hardwood cabinet – Gorgeous dovetail joinery, vintage patina, and rich tone.

  • Factory Graphic EQ – Full 5-band shaping for scooped rhythm or mid-forward lead tones (note: two EQ sliders are broken but still functional).

  • Wicker grille – Classic aesthetic, original and intact.

  • 6L6 tube power section – Fully loaded with matched Sovtek 5881/6L6WGCs.

  • 110V original power – Includes stepdown transformer for AUS/EU compatibility.

  • Rear panel: Slave out, preamp out, presence & reverb controls, 4/8 ohm speaker taps, fan-cooled chassis.

Condition:

  • Electronically clean and working well. Tubes are strong.

  • Wood cabinet shows honest wear: scuffs and light corner bruising (see side photos).

  • Two EQ sliders are damaged (plastic caps snapped) but moveable and operational.

  • All switches, toggles, and jacks functional.

  • Cosmetic wear consistent with age—this amp has history and tone to match.
