The slope-shouldered J-45 has been Gibson’s go-to since the ’40s, and this 2016 example shows why. It’s got the classic spruce and mahogany recipe with a balanced, woody tone that works for just about any style. The pickguard’s gone walkabout (these things kind of look neat guardless), but the guitar itself is clean, plays well, and comes with its original hard case.
